My opinion on Tiger King

After hearing all the hype and seeing all the Netflix ads about Tiger King I gave in. I decided to watch it mainly based on all of the memes and the tik toks challenges to the songs based on the documentary. Such as these:

It was an interesting documentary, but not what I expected at all. I was shocked by all the murder, drama, and crime that went on behind the scenes. The first three episodes were interesting, but after that I lost interest. After it went from all about Joe Exoctic’s crazy life to all about crime and court hearings it got pretty boring.

Ozark Season 1 Review

4.29.20

I was looking for a new show to start in quarantine and was recommended to watch Ozark by a few people. The plot of the story revolves around the main character Marty Byrde. He is a financial planner in Chicago whose partner got caught up with the cartel. Marty suddenly becomes a money launderer for the cartel to avoid being murdered. The show follows the Byrde family to their move to the Ozarks and them adjusting to their new life. The family includes Marty and his wife Wendy along with their two teenage kids. The show is full of backstabbing, cheating, drama, and crime. The first season did not disappoint and has become my new favorite show. I highly recommend!

A Quarantine Week Blog

Everyday seems to be a constant cycle of school work during the day and relaxing at night. To change it up a bit, each day I try to do something different that can take my mind off school work and everything else going on. On Saturday I did a puzzle, Sunday I decided to make a new breakfast recipe, and yesterday I dedicated some time to discovering new music. Doing this has led me to not be entirely stir crazy.

A few songs that I have discovered include:

Today I was inspired to start making collages. I have seen a lot of people, especially on Tik Tok creating mood boards and collages to put up in their room. I went onto Pinterest and decided to start making my own. Some of the pictures I have added include:

in the end the result will look more like this:

Stir Crazy

I am someone who usually keeps busy while at school, so being stuck in the house has been a huge adjustment for me. Before school started up again I was going a big stir crazy. I looked up some articles (https://www.talktomira.com/post/7-things-to-do-at-home-during-the-coronavirus-quarantine) to give me an idea of what to do to pass the time. I’ve taken some advice from the article and have cleaned, ordered from a new restaurant, and done yoga. The first two weeks of quarantine I cleaned out my entire room and bathroom. I found some online workouts on YouTube that I started doing, such as this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBWQGb4LyAM&t=503s) to stay active.

Since school has started up again my day consists of waking up around 10 am and eating some breakfast. I make a list of things I want to accomplish that day after I eat. I then do a workout at home or go for a run, followed by a walk around town with my mom. After this I work on homework a bit until lunch time. After lunch I do the rest of my homework for the day. After dinner I usually watch American Idol, 90 Day Fiance, or Shark Tank with my family. At night I work a bit on upcoming projects for my classes and face time my friends to catch up. I have started to binge a lot of shows such as How to Get Away with Murder, Tiger King, and On My Block.

life has gone from this:

to this:

Pangolins

A pangolin is a mammal that is covered in scales. Pangolins are carnivorous animals, usually eating ants and termites. They also eat larvae and a few other insects whole since they have no teeth. Pangolins walk on their knuckles by curling their nails under their feet. They often walk on their hind legs. Just like humans they sometimes walk on their two legs. A pangolins habitat is sandy areas, such as savannas and wooded areas. They remain close to water sources and can be found in tropical forests.

Like humans, it takes both a female and male sex organs to reproduce. Male pangolins often fight each other for females in the mating seasons in their preferred mating seasons, which is May to July. The winning male will mate with the female pangolin. The mating period lasts three to five days.

The scales cost more than $3,000 per kg on the black market and live ones cost around $1,000. Pangolins who live in the wild their life span is unknown, but like around 20 years in captivity. A lot of illegal trade takes place with pangolins and it has been found that they can carry similar strands of corona virus that humans have been getting.

Sound Review: music video

I decided to do my review on “Hey There Delilah” by Plain White T’s. This song talks about long distance love. This was one of my favorite songs growing up. I love the lyrics and softness of the melody. This is relevant to now since many are quarantined far away from their loved ones. The singer is singing to Delilah who is in New York City, 1,000 miles away from him. The song is intended to comfort Delilah if she feels lonely. The song seems very heartfelt and you can hear the emotion in his voice. The chorus is catchy and the lyrics are sweet. The lyric, “the world will never ever be the same” really fits in with what the world is going through right now. The song is a classical throwback and continues to be one of my favorite songs.

Reef Madness: scene analysis

The movie Reefer Madness (https://marist.kanopy.com/video/reefer-madness) was released in the 1930s but even though it is almost 90 years old it contained lots of edited scenes. The scene is I am focusing on is the scene where Blanche jumps out of the window. She does this after after pleading guilty to the murder of Mary. This scene is found starting at 1:01:55 when she is walking down the hall and ends at 1:03:00 with her on the sidewalk lying face down. The scene starts with Blanche walking in the hallway tearing up after pleading guilty. As she is walking towards the window she has flashbacks of parts of her life. This scene is impressive since pieces of her life events are displayed as a montage.

The editing of this scene jumps from Blanche crying to her running towards the window. As soon as she gets near the window she is shown jumping out of the window and then it cuts to her in midair falling towards the ground. It cuts again to show her on the sidewalk lying there after falling. The contrast of Blanche looking at the window to the cut of her having flashbacks of her life lead to an effective emotion. In real life of course she did not really jump out of the window, it was probably a doll or stunt double. The cuts make the viewer think she did jump from the window. The cuts between her jumping to her in mid air and her on the ground give enough information for the audience to make the connection without having to see the entire fall. The scene cuts off after the camera pans in on her lying lifeless on the cement sidewalk. This is very dramatic end to this part of the film. This scene is the darkest point of the movie and

Blanche jumping is a symbol of how bad marijuana is in a way. The whole time the movie is talking about how dangerous marijuana is and her jump proves that. She feels so guilty she had and shared marijuana that she feels like she deserves to die. Her jumping is a statement to prove how marijuana leads to crime, violence, and even death sometimes. It moves onto the last few minutes of the movie and this scene is not talked about again. The music in the background adds to the event. It is slow music that has a dull sound of violin in the background. The audio is eventful, but sad at the same time. It carries on the story, but lets the viewer know something important is happening.

Review of Reefer Madness

The movie Reefer Madness really surprised me. I did not know anything about the movie before and I decided to watch it based on the intriguing title. The whole basis of the story is how marijuana is a horrible, scary drug. It is funny to me how marijuana was once thought to drive you insane. This is the opposite of today where it is legal and used as medicine. The movie had some really funny scenes and great acting. At first the movie seems like a basic black and white rom-com. About twenty minutes into the movie we see the main characters start to smoke marijuana. Instantly one of the characters starts to laugh hysterically after taking a few hits.

The movie goes onto two men talking in an office about how marijuana leads crime. I was shocked when they said a 16 year old boy killed his family after taking the drug. This is crazy to hear since marijuana use has not led to this in the real world. This scene talks about how there is so much crime linked to marijuana use. Jim sits with the principal who tells him that his grades have started to go down. Two of the main characters, Bill and Jimmy start smoking dope, which affects their family lives and leads to lots of crime. There is a lot of violence present and even the murder of Mary is attributed to smoking weed and one of the characters goes to jail for the murder. Towards the end they even show one of the characters hallucinating after smoking marijuana.

Since this movie is from 1936 it is crazy to watch in the year 2020. It is extremely funny to see how marijuana was viewed back then. The most interesting part to me is that the marijuana smokers were depicted as aggressive, which is the opposite of the stereotype “stoners” have today. The movie makes it look like marijuana ruins lives, when today it is used to save lives of the sick. Stoners are seen as being calm and laid back. This movie is inaccurate, but since it was made in the 1930s it makes sense that they had the wrong idea of the drug. This movie was extremely interesting to watch. I never knew there was such a different year on marijuana in the 1930s. It was entertaining and slightly educational at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and acting in the film.
